An article in the May 4, 1922 Tribune News gives the following information about a local Civil War unit. According to the article, the Etowah Infantry was organized in 1859 and was the first company to leave from the county to enter Confederate service. The unit enlisted on March 12, 1861 and the following month boarded a train at the Cartersville depot that took them to Pensacola, Florida.
